Understanding Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: Benton Franklin Orthopedic Associates

At Benton Franklin Orthopedic Associates, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care that enhances and restores functional ability and quality of life for individuals with physical impairments or disabilities. Our team of specialists is committed to helping patients achieve their highest level of independence and well-being.

What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry or rehabilitation medicine, is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.  Physiatrists, the physicians who specialize in PM&R, design comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans to maximize function and improve quality of life.

The Role of Physiatrists

Physiatrists are experts in creating individualized treatment plans that address the unique needs of each patient. They utilize a combination of cutting-edge and time-tested treatments to help patients recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and improve their overall physical function.  These specialists work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to provide holistic care.

Common Conditions Treated

PM&R encompasses a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Stroke Recovery: Helping patients regain mobility and function after a stroke.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury: Managing the complex needs of patients with brain injuries.
  • Spinal Cord Dysfunction: Addressing issues related to spinal cord injuries and diseases.
  • Neurological Disorders: Treating conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
  • Musculoskeletal Pain: Managing pain and dysfunction in muscles, bones, and joints1.

Dr. Stephen Dechter is a proud native of the Tri-Cities and is deeply honored to have the opportunity to return home and serve the community. Coming from a long line of educators, he has a profound passion for training the next generation of doctors. You will often find him accompanied by a medical student or two, sharing knowledge and fostering their growth.

Dr. Dechter's expertise in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, combined with Interventional Pain Management, equips him with a unique skill set. This allows him to offer patients alternative solutions beyond just medications or surgery. He takes pride in his ability to step back, view problems from different angles, and introduce fresh perspectives to treatment plans. His primary goals are to provide high-quality patient care, achieve excellent outcomes, reduce pain, restore function, and enhance the quality of life.

He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with a subspecialty in Pain Medicine. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Dechter completed his fellowship training in Pain Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles/VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. He completed his residency at MetroHealth Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended medical school at Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, CA. Additionally, he serves as adjunct faculty at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, where he is the Tri-Cities Regional Dean Liaison and a Master Preceptor.

Dr. Dechter's special emphasis areas include sports medicine, spine and musculoskeletal interventional procedures, regenerative medicine techniques, neuromodulation, and spinal cord stimulation. In his free time, he enjoys staying active through fitness and nutrition, woodworking, spending time outdoors, engaging in medical education, and cherishing moments with his family.

Treatment Approaches

The treatment approaches in PM&R are diverse and tailored to each patient's specific condition and goals.  PM&R providers are specifically trained in musculoskeletal pain.

They may include:

  • Physical Therapy: Exercises and techniques to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility.
  • Occupational Therapy: Strategies to enhance daily living skills and independence.
  • Pain Management: Techniques to alleviate pain and improve comfort.
  • Assistive Devices: Tools and equipment to support mobility and function.
  • Medication Management: Prescribing and monitoring medications to manage symptoms.
